Chapter Seven
I’d expected to wake in his bed. I’m disappointed that I’ve awakened in mine. But disappointment is not discouragement, and with my body still singing from his touch, the way he held me, I rise on a wave of optimism from my bed ahead of the sun.
I choose a butter yellow dress that contrasts the gray dawn that finally comes through my window, pairing it with ecru tights and black Mary Janes. Less than a week in, and I’ve not even begun to make a dent in the wardrobe with a style I’ve come to love.
I can hardly wait to see Silas at breakfast. My heart tells me that even if I ended up in my own bed, last night was something of a breakthrough. I forced him to face me, and to face himself. I bared my soul. And while I have no real way of knowing, I want to believe that none of the other women in his book tried to reach him, tried to make him see beyond his perception of them as mere gold-diggers.
I turn on the television and watch the morning news. Things on the outside are much the same as they were when I entered this alternate reality with Silas. But here, I feel sheltered from all the bad news—from the terrible weather forecast to the ugly politics to the dire potential for war.
Finally, when the clock on the wall edges toward eight, I prepare to leave the room. But before I can, there’s a knock on the door, and when I open it, I’m surprised to see Mrs. Kim standing there with a covered tray.
“Mr. Stanton prefers you take breakfast in your room,” she says, breezing past me. She’s gotten friendlier since my arrival, but doesn’t look at me now as she places the tray on the table and removes the dome to reveal fluffy eggs, Canadian bacon, fruit, and thick slices of buttered toast. “He also sends his regrets, as he will not be able to instruct you today.”
“Is he working?” I demand to know, stung by this change in routine.
“I don’t ask, miss,” she says. “It’s not my place.” She heads to the door. “Enjoy your meal.”
Enjoy my meal? My appetite is suddenly gone but I sit down at the table anyway, at a loss for what to do. I pick at my breakfast, and am only able to force myself to eat less than half of it. Afterwards I rise and walk to the window. Am I to remain here all day?
No. I won’t.
I stomp from the room and head directly to Silas’. The door is unlocked and I barge in as I did the night before, but he is not there. I head downstairs, stopping first by the drawing room, then head to the study. And there he is, sitting at his desk. He looks up, wearing the same shocked expression he wore the night before when I showed up without permission. He’s writing, and by his right hand is a jewelry box.
